Dread Central Exclusive: Roy Z Talks Zombie Squash, Music and Coming Back As One Of The Undead

RoyZproducerRoy Z is a badass musician and producer who is known for his killer work with Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford and Judas Priest. We recently chatted with Roy about his work on the Zombie Squash game starring George A. Romero, his current music projects and much more.

AMANDA DYAR: Tell us, what have you been up to nowadays?

ROY Z: I’ve been mixing, writing, recording and developing artist, working with new young artists, teaching, you name it. I’m currently mixing, what I would call an international group, because they’re all from different countries, called One Machine. I’m mixing their debut now. My good buddy, Steve Smythe is in the band, who, when I first met him, was in Testament in 2003 when we toured together with Halford. I’ve also been working and developing a group called Art of Shock. I’m doing their EP now and they’re going to be on the Warped tour this year. I’m putting together, instead of retrospective, an Introspective of Tribe of Gypsies. It’s a double CD, and it’s going to have four new songs as well as different songs from our catalog. You know, there are other real cool things on the horizon that I can’t talk about right now, but I’m real excited about what’s happening with Zombie Squash and being able to create a bit of a soundtrack to video games, which I used to play a lot as a kid, it’s a different mind-set.

AMANDA: What drew you to Zombie Squash and what did you enjoy most about working on it?

ROY Z: Well first of all, through the Halford experience, I became friends with Attila Juhasz and you know, working with Attila and just the idea and the concept drew me to the whole thing. Working with Attila on other projects, I always knew he was a serious dude and very professional so I took it as, not only a complement, because it was his private thing, but I took it as a really cool coincidence, because I grew up playing all the video games. I had to get rid of all my video game systems otherwise I wouldn’t work, I’d just play video games. (laughs) So it’s kind of weird, that my work nowadays has computers and it’s kind of like playing video games in music these days; what you can do, it’s so strange how those worlds have collided through computers. But getting back to the project, I just felt good about it and I have so much music, that some of it I thought it would be great for a video game so when Attila asked me I already had a stash of songs ready to go.

AMANDA: How was composing music for a video game different than other projects you have done?

ROY Z: With video games, it’s a lot like a movie scene or TV scene, you’re enhancing what’s going on, so there’s certain repetition and a certain build up and certain notes to enhance that. The songs that I chose have that in them, they create this sort of build up or create a sort of calmness or an in-between moment, for certain pauses and working in that text. Video game music can be like zen music, some of it can be crazy and …

RIP Ray Harryhausen – A note from Zombie Squash creator, Attila Juhasz

108httalks.1

“Ray Harryhausen was pivotal in the development of my imagination. As a kid, I was in awe of his fx work. He introduced me to Greek mythology, to the hero Sinbad, to UFOs, alien beings and other monsters. But most importantly, his work inspired me to read books by Jules Verne (Mysterious Island) and H.G. Welles (First Men in the Moon). I am very fortunate to have a nice Harryhausen collection on DVD, and I will forever revisit these classics over and over again because like the spirit of childhood imagination, they are timeless and precious. Do yourself a favor and relax and escape from reality for a little while with your favorite Harryhausen film. RIP Ray Harryhausen.”

Zombie Squash is now available for free on iOS devices and stars the legendary George A. Romero as Dr. B.E. Vil, an evil scientist with plans to take over the world with some rowdy undead veggies!

We recently chatted with the game’s creator, Attila Juhasz, about bringing this undead project to life. Read on to learn more.

AMANDA DYAR: Tell us a little about yourself and ACW Games/Attila’s Creative Works LLC.

ATTILA JUHASZ: I’m creatively obsessed. (chuckles) I love to create and am most happy when I write, design, program, produce or compose. Having a jack-of-all-trades personality lead me to start ACW Games, a division of Attila’s Creative Works LLC, which I formed in 2005. All my passions culminate in the creation of a game.

I’m also a big fan of quality, fantastical horror movies. George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead is still my favorite genre film of all time. In 1995 I launched what many consider to be the first commercial horror website, horrormovies.com, which I sold in 1998 to a publicly traded entertainment company and took the role of Director of Internet Marketing, where I produced the world’s first Internet Séance. I also wrote for a few leading horror magazines.

AMANDA: How did Zombie Squash get started and what were the main inspirations for it?

ATTILA: Two years ago I was obsessed with trying to come up with an idea for a game that could conceptually have tremendous commercial appeal, entertain all ages, and be fun for someone with interests like I do. I also wanted to do something different with zombies. Like a flash, the name hit me out of nowhere, Zombie Squash. But then I needed an angle that would separate me from the thousands of zombie games on the market already, be okay for kids but make a guy like me happy. Minutes later squash went from a verb to a noun. That was my twist, make actual squash and vegetation become the zombies. I was so excited about the idea that I started singing in jingle style “zombie squash” and thus the theme song was instantly born as well. The name, game concept and theme song all happened in a snowball of events afternoon. In six months I created a crude beta PC demo on my own and released it on the web. The feedback was tremendous and it attracted some great talent including music producer Roy Z. and George A. Romero, the godfather of all zombies.

AMANDA: How did George A. Romero get involved on the project, and tell us a little about his character, Dr. Beau E. Vil.

ATTILA: I wanted to bring in a well-known name to the game and to me, no name in the zombie world is more important or iconic than George A. Romero. He read my Zombie Squash game document and character voice-over script, loved it and was on board. George came up with the character’s over-the-top accent and had a lot of fun recording it. The entire session was filmed. A few clips are in the Zombie Squash trailer.

Zombie Apocalypse Monthly: GEORGE ROMERO LENDS VOICE TO ZOMBIE VEGETABLE GAME

217565_422492524503051_2071144030_n

In the popular game Plants Vs Zombies, players call on a variety of garden plants to fend off wavesof the undead trying to make their way across a suburban back yard. A new game, Zombie Squash, turns that premise on its head, making the vegetables into the living dead.

Zombie Squash is a world where plants and vegetables like turban squash and fairy tail pumpkins turn into zombies spawned from the evil experiments of Dr. B. E. Vil, owner of the controversial bio-chemical, genetics company Monsterno Corporation. In a casting coup, ACW Games got George Romero, the grandfather of the modern zombie film, to provide the voice of the villain.

The game was released last month at Amazon.com and Google Play. The free game is compatible with over 2,400 Android devices. An HD version for the iPad was recently released at iTunes and the iPhone version is expected to be available at iTunes in May.

Zombie Squash is described as a tower defense style game where you play as Jack Stompingtail, a fearless rabbit who fires carrots, zucchini and other garden ammo at Dr. B. E. Vil’s horde of gourde onslaught. The player has to try and stop the Zombie Squash from taking over the world.

After competing the first 5 levels, you unlock the addictive, survival mode mini-game.

Come ha detto George Romero: “It’s not a game about squashing zombies, it’s a game about zombie squash.”
